Back at the house, Sunday was being pulled in many different directions. In the bedroom, they had her seated naked in front of the open window so she wouldn’t sweat. Iris took her time braiding Sunday’s hair into a crown, highlighting the beauty of her face. When she began dressing, Mama, who rarely showed any emotion, broke down and cried, and they had to stop and cry with her. She was happy, and so were they. Finally, when Sunday was dressed and standing in front of the mirror, she was a sight to behold. Mama stayed with her while Iris ran to see where they were in terms of getting started.

Coming down the hall, Iris saw Black standing in the foyer across from the sitting room with Paul, Otis, Elbert, and James. They were all dressed in dark suits, but Black stood out as he smiled at something that was said, and Iris realized that he looked younger than usual. It was wonderful to see him happy. She came to stand among them, and Paul placed his hands on her back before kissing her cheek.

“We are ready when you are,” Iris said.

Black nodded, and Otis waved Herschel and Mary over.

Mary smiled at Iris before asking, “Is she ready?”

“She is,” Iris answered.

“Let us take our places then,” Herschel said, dressed in all blue, with his gray hair combed neatly back.

Stepping out onto the porch in the morning sun, Black took in the scene before him. The people of Fort Independence stood around the house as far as the eye could see to watch him exchange vows. He turned to face Herschel with Otis and Paul at his side. The moment was hushed as though not real when one of the fiddlers stepped forward, climbing into a wagon parked in front of the house and seating himself in front of the piano he began to play …

Once the music started, Black could see movement out of the corner of his eye. Turning, he looked down the long hall as Sunday made her way toward him in a long white dress with Mama holding the train. The corridor was slightly dark, and with the sun behind him, he could not see her in detail. Black did not take his eyes from her, and when she reached the door, stepping onto the porch and into the sunlight, he was captivated. She was a vision to witness in the white dress with a splash of chocolate skin as the dress revealed her bare shoulders. She came to stand next to him, facing Herschel with Mama and Iris at her side. Her hand found his, and he could feel her trembling.

The music abruptly stopped as she came to stand next to Black.

Clearing his throat, Herschel began, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join this man, Nat Hope Turner, and this woman, Sunday Turner, in holy matrimony.” Pausing for effect, he continued, “Nat, do you take this woman to be your wife, to live together
